Grandpa and the Truck – Tales by a Long-Haul Trucker

A Trucker and Author Wife Pen His Tales of the Big Rigs…for Little Ones

A 30-year school teacher who went on to a six-figure salary as realtor, gave it all up to write the series highlighting the adventures of her long-haul trucker husband, as he moved households across America, for 3 decades.

“Grandpa and the Truck” stories are for kids 4-8 by Author Colleen Kelly Mellor and Asheville illustrator, Dana Irwin. There are three books of the series, two are available now and each book is comprised of two stories, sure to pique the interest of little ones.

They highlight our nation’s geography and allow children to follow a big rig on its journey across America, focusing on historical events such as Woodstock Music Festival, the power of Nature, and the diversity of the American people. All teach important life lessons. In addition, young readers learn truckers’ unique lifestyle and language.

Oral excerpts of the books are available on the website, www.grandpaandthetruck.com just click the tab “Listen to my Readings” on the bar under the top banner.

Author Colleen Mellor strongly asserts: “These books are not just for boys.” Book 2 , has, as its first story, “Girl Truckers” confirming the message that gender should never dictate career choice. It’s based on two Rhode Island women, daughters of veteran trucker “Leatherneck” O’Day, who became a trucking sensation in their day.

The story is paired with “Grandpa Meets the Hurricane” , set in Biloxi, Mississippi, when Grandpa faces a hurricane in the middle of the night, demonstrating nature’s considerable power.

Trucker’s wife, Colleen Mellor has had numerous works published in the Wall Street Journal, Providence Journal, Scripps-Howard, CNN and NY Times-acclaimed medical blog kevinMD.com. She writes regular columns for her grandpaandthetruck.com website, as well as her other website at www.biddybytes.com

Mellor considers herself a bridge between the trucker’s world and a public who knows very little about those who move the nation’s products. She plans on changing that through stories geared for her young audience—always a trucker’s biggest fan base.

I was a member of Women in Trucking becuse I thought Desiree was the owner on linkedin….When I saw Ellen V was I left the group…..I wondered why my post didn’t get put up…sheesh…OK now that I have the right site….Desire LOL…I hve a serious announcement: Sgt Donna Johnson stationed at Fort Brag was killed in action. Her funeral will be at Raeford Presbyterian Church Sat Oct 13 at 128 W Edinborough Ave. Her internment will be held at Raeford City Cemetery 315 N Main St., Raeford NC. Problem: The Westboro Baptist Chruch has called it’s congregation to be there to protest against the government, while this soldiers family has to put their loved one in the ground for following orders. Now we have a lot of ex military drivers, or drivers that have fathers, mothers, sons, daughters etc involved in the military. It is way past time we started interferring with these lunatic protesters shouthing hatred to an already grieving family and community. We are calling all drivers to join us in putting a wall of trucks around the burial area, along with the bikers and Native Americans who will also be there. Call me directly with questions or directions 252-717-7421. Time to stop this hatred and close the ranks and band together. This is not the time so called Christians should use to further their agenda with hatred.
