Allen Smith the original CDL student advocate is known for his extreme passion and conviction to warn new truck driver students about the scams involved in trucking CDL Schools and starter companies. His 2000 book “The Truth About Trucking” revealed the questionable tactics of student truck driver industry that still exist today; the unlivable low wages, the commercial drivers license mills (CDL Mills), false advertising in truck driver recruiting, the one-sided truck lease scams, and more. The REAL Women in Trucking are thrilled that Allen Smith will host the Welcome mixer on the cruise along with his wife and co-host of their popular “Ask the Trucker” blog talk radio program and Trucking Social Media.

Allen Smith who was formerly in law enforcement and has taught Traditional Tae Kwon Do both publicly and privately since receiving his first black belt in 1979 will be teaching a “Women’s Basic Self Defense” course for attendees of the cruise that includes the following:

img_0118Shannon Morris is a professional truck driver who is passionate about driving and views it as an amazing, challenging adventure. She owns two operating trucks and trailers, and also founded her own companies, Happy Flats, Inc. in 2007 and Special “D” Transport, Inc. from 2000-2012. Before Shannon’s career as a driver, she received an Associate in Science degree in paralegal studies and worked as a paralegal for several years. Due to an injury, she had to change careers and obtained her CDL in 1998.

Shannon has had the honor of being nominated to the final three of the “Back on the Road 2011” program , and she was the only female driver to have ever made it that far.

She was also selected for the “l in 100 million” presentation by Kronos

Shannon will be delivering a workshop on the cruise to help company drivers understand the process of becoming a owner-operator. Shannon will help drivers understand differences between company drivers, lease owner operators, owner operators leased to companies, and operating authority. She will explain the factoring process for drivers considering obtaining their own authority.

Christine Gray is doing a job her husband of twenty one years said, she couldn’t!! After driving everything you could think of local in Chicago for the first seven years to quench her desire of wanting to know all aspects of driving , she landed her first hazmat tanker job a found true love for her job as a truck driver.

She has been pulling a tank ever since. Twenty years later, she remains passionate about her career. With the support of her Husband, three children, friends, family and coworkers, she has been a successful owner operator, achieved over a million and half safe driving miles, certified in OSHA, HAZMAT, recovery and spill clean-up.  Christine says “The most valuable lesson of driving is Patience and Self -preservation“. Christine’s speaker presentation will focus on how women behind the wheel stay safe. Using Women’s intuition, Awareness, Common sense.

Anne Balay, published writer, and former truck driver and who recently wrote the op-ed piece in the New York Time’s titled “Long-Haul Sweatshops” with Mona Shattell will give an informal lecture about lesbians and T-girls who drive 18-wheelers. Anne does not need to tell you that truckers have exciting, challenging lives, and that you are great storytellers. And as lesbians and T-girls, we are bold, brave, and know how to have fun.
